Washington-Wilkes Comprehensive High School has been recognized by the Georgia Department of Education as a 2024–2025 Literacy Leader, an honor awarded to schools demonstrating exceptional achievement in reading and literacy. WWCHS is one of only 406 schools statewide to receive this recognition.

At the high school level, the Literacy Leader for Growth designation is based on student improvement on the Georgia Milestones American Literature and Composition End-of-Course assessment. The award recognizes schools where students have demonstrated measurable growth in literacy, as measured by the state’s Reading Status indicator and corresponding Lexile levels.

Congratulations to our teachers, students, and administrators for their commitment to academic excellence. This recognition reflects their dedication, hard work, and shared belief in continuous improvement for all learners.

School Principals' Month

Wilkes County Schools is proud to announce a 2025 graduation rate of 87.1%, the highest since 2019, and a remarkable increase from last year’s rate of 77.8%. This 9.3 percentage point gain reflects the hard work and determination of our students, the support of families, and the commitment of our educators.

Although just one-tenth of a point below the state average of 87.2%, this year’s milestone highlights the impact of strong academic supports, expanded opportunities for engagement, and partnerships between school and home. Together, we are helping more students graduate on time and prepare for success beyond high school.

This afternoon, Washington-Wilkes Middle and Comprehensive High Schools conducted their required intruder drills in coordination with the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were on campus to help sweep the buildings, and we truly appreciate their partnership in making safety a priority.

The drills were completed smoothly, and our students and staff did an excellent job following procedures. Practicing these scenarios is an important part of ensuring we are prepared to respond in the event of an emergency, and we thank you for supporting our ongoing commitment to keeping your children safe.

This is a reminder that our school buses are equipped with stop-arm cameras to help keep students safe as they get on and off the bus. Under Georgia’s Addy’s Law (HB 409), drivers who pass a stopped school bus while the stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing can be charged with a high and aggravated misdemeanor, face a minimum fine of $1,000, and up to 12 months in jail. This law was created to protect children across Georgia. We appreciate your help in keeping our students safe by staying alert and always stopping for school buses.
