Early Literacy

At Wilkes County Schools, we are committed to Excellence Without Exception, and that begins with ensuring a strong foundation in literacy for every student. In alignment with the Georgia Department of Education’s vision to improve literacy outcomes for all students, we are actively working to implement initiatives that support early reading success in our schools.

Georgia is experiencing a powerful momentum around literacy with key developments shaping statewide practice and policy. The Georgia Early Literacy & Dyslexia Act (House Bill 307) and the implementation of Georgia’s updated K-12 English Language Arts Standards (set for the 2025–2026 school year) are two critical efforts guiding this work. These initiatives will support districts like ours as we strengthen instruction, identify and support struggling readers, and ensure every child has access to high-quality, evidence-based literacy practices.

As part of our district’s strategic plan to build strong foundations for learning, early literacy remains a top priority. Through collaboration, professional learning, and targeted support, we are preparing our students to thrive—Every Tiger. Every Day.
